body mass index and new "quad belly" calcs

We have been fretting a lot more lately. Our worries have been about Daisy: her weight and BMI. I did some rough calculations using the human BMI calculators.

For an adult, she tops out at 62 which is off the charts and very obese. The CDC message was "Your BMI is 62.4, indicating your weight is in the obese category for adults of your height."

On the children's BMI, she doesn't even make the chart. Plus, I got a little red "!" telling me my child could be overweight if the calculation was correct.

I did some more searches and found a feline BMI calculator.

On August 11th, Daisy was part of Flandria 8/9/07 and Beth's quad contest and she topped in at 52 cm. However today, I squeezed the tape a bit tighter since lower would be better. I found her patella(which was kind of hard to find) and measured her lower limb for the "LIM" number. Daisy is 45=rib cage, 13=LIM for 42.4 total. At least, she makes this chart. (Minnie was 38=rib cage and 15=LIM for a total of 27.4)

We need to try and do something to get her to lose some weight. The feeding thing is hard since she doesn't seem to eat that much. I think mostly it's her lack of exercise.

Daisy seems to sleep a lot.

We would like to find some type of kitty exercise equipment. A treadmill probably wouldn't work because she would just lie down and not move. Then, she would get caught in the conveyor belt and get hurt.
Anyone have some creative ideas?

live mice from the pet store...

I had a friend who did this for her house kitty, she would buy live mice (the ones for boas), secure an area with fencing and let her kitty chase it all around. It got her cat moving. Don't tell Peta though.

lillybella-daisy is sweet and would not know what to do with a mouse...it is kind of gross watching a cat eat a mouse...they eat the whole thing bones and all...and it's a bit bloody...

thank you anyway for the creative cat exercise...

"have you tried staples?"

staples just makes the poo come out really fast and runny..and, it's not such a good thing since the patients usually gain back all that weight...what we need is a good feline exercise regime which excludes live mice...

did you see the news? the BMI numbers are a little light they recently figured out.

The weird news is that I am no longer borderline obese, but no border line anorexic.

how old is she? maybe it's because she's older and her metabolism has slowed down?

you could put her on a leash and take her for a walk. do you think she'd walk on a leash?

daisy doesn't bend.

She is 2 and she really doesn't bend. That's why we have to shave the backend. And I don't know of we need a kitty yogafuck. At least she doesn't drive.

I think fbmi seems accurate and she's not even close to being undeweight.

our skinny hyper cat likes to go out on the leash. but he's skinny and hyper.

our fat lazy cat is too dumb to go outside. the only exercise he gets is chasing catnip toys. but he never lasts very long at it. so he keeps getting fatter. if we ration the food, the skinny cat gets too skinny.

maybe there's something other than live mice (eeew) that she would chase? or maybe she'd like a leash walk. skinny hyper cat really likes leash walks. but he also plays fetch, so he's a little confused about his felinity.

Maggie is a very good kitty-get-the-ass-in-gear motivator. She'll hold out the crackers that she'll threaten to spread cat-ier Daisy on. Sigh. She's just so inspirational that way, my girl. Just give her a jingle if Daisy needs inspiration...

ooh the dingo, rent a dingo...that's it! I was going to say get a dog, but Wilddingo's idea is better. If that doesn't work K.C. is available. And yes, I have very wierd friends... just how did stapling her gut, doing cat yoga seem more reasonable?

Daisy copies Minnie and Minnie won't walk on the leash. I have to follow him and mostly he's just stopped eating grass. If I try to walk him, he throws himself on the ground and won't move. No aerobic/fat burning workout is acheived.

Staples and yoga weren't options either.

If we invited Wilddingo & KC to assist in the kitty exercise regime, we would be bad "guardians".

Seriously now: how about a red lazer pointer? No kittie can resist its addictive power. You barely have to move. you can sit on your sofa while Daisy does laps in your living room.
